Anania verbascalis

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1382 / 63.023

Morley’s Final Catalogue: Also local, but a great deal more generally distributed than the last kind: Bentley Wood in June 1899 (Mly) and 1901 (Gibbs); Copdock (Hkg); Ipswich (Ml); Holbrook Park and Woolpit (Crewe); Fritton (Crf). Brandon (Barrett).

Recent Status: A local species in Suffolk. Found at open dry locations and conifer plantation rides where Wood Sage occurs. Immigrant individuals can also be found.

Life Style: A single brooded summer flying species that comes to light. The larvae feed on Teucrium scorodonia Initially from beneath a leaf but later more exposed. They overwinter fully grown in a cocoon where they pupate in spring.

Identification: Anania verbascalis is a brightly coloured moth with brown markings on yellow or pale orange wings. The arrangement of the reniform stigma mark, the post median line and the sub terminal line may often give the forewing the appearance of having three distinct cross lines.
